Walthers to produce El Capitan passenger model train in HO scale

Wm. K. Walthers, a manufacturer of model railroading products, has announced that it will produce an HO scale model of the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Ry. El Capitan passenger train. This model train will be based on the 1956 consist that included Budd-built Hi-Level cars. These cars ran on the Santa Fe until 1971. These cars can also be run with Walthers Super Chief cars to model the combined train that ran after 1958.

The El Capitan cars include the baggage car, railway post office, baggage-dormitory "transition" car with rooftop shroud, 68-seat step-down Hi-Level coach, 72-seat Hi-Level coach, Hi-Level diner, Hi-Level lounge, and 68-seat step-down Hi-Level coach with tail sign. The manufacturer's suggested retail price (MSRP) for the Hi-Level cars is 79.98 each. The MSRP for the baggage-dormitory car is $74.98. The MSRP for the baggage and RPO cars is $69.98 each.

Each El Capitan car is fully assembled and features Walthers real metal "stainless steel" plated finish, tinted windows, factory-installed grab irons, and correct trucks. The cars have full underbody detail and have a recommended minimum radius of 24".

The El Capitan will also be available in a limited edition nine-car deluxe set for $964.64. The set includes the baggage car, RPO, baggage-dormitory car, and six Hi-Level cars. In addition to the features of the standard cars, the Hi-Level cars in the deluxe set include factory-installed interior lighting, factory-installed Preiser figures, and a Hi-Level Step-Down coach with lighted Drumhead tail sign. Each car includes a numbered certificate of authenticity and only 350 sets will be produced.

Walthers has also announced that it will produce matching passenger warbonnet Santa Fe 37-Class Electro-Motive Division F7A and F7B diesels with prototype-specific details and plated real-metal finish. The MSRP of the DC only models is $169.98 (single unit) and $329.98 (A-B set). The MSRP of the Digital Command Control (DCC) sound models is $259.98 (single unit) and $479.98 (A-B set).

The El Capitan passenger cars are expected to ship beginning in late 2011. For more information visit www.walthers.com
